How Many Controllers Can Connect to Xbox One

  • Figuring out how many controllers can connect to an Xbox One at once can be confusing, since its controllers typically connect without any wires or cables.
  • You can connect up to eight controllers at once to an Xbox One, which is the most allowed for any major gaming console.
  • The Nintendo Switch also allows for eight — with some limitations — while the PlayStation 4 only allows for up to four controllers.

When it comes to throwing a big gaming party, you'll want to have as many people playing at once as you can. This means using a console that supports multiple controllers.

One of the most popular consoles for these sorts of parties is Microsoft's Xbox One. But since most Xbox One controllers connect wirelessly, it's not always obvious just how many controller connections the console can support.

Fortunately, if you're looking to hold a party with as many people playing at once as possible, the Xbox One might be what you're looking for. Here's what you should know.

You can connect up to eight controllers to your Xbox One at once

When it comes to the maximum amount of controllers you can use at once, the Xbox One wins among major consoles, accommodating up to eight players at one time.

Past versions of the Xbox only allowed up to four controllers. Following the original Xbox and Xbox 360, the Xbox One — released in 2013 — doubled the amount of controllers allowed at once.

This is double the max controller count of the PlayStation 4. The only system that also supports eight is the Nintendo Switch, though the Switch won't give you that option until you turn on a game that uses eight players, or until you use a special controller hub.

You'll need a special adapter to connect certain types of Nintendo Switch controllers to that system.

How to add multiple controllers to your Xbox One

To add another controller, follow the same steps for each additional player: turn on the controller by holding its Xbox button to turn it on, followed by pressing the console's sync button and holding the controller's sync button.

The sync button is located on the top of the controller, near the microUSB port.

The Xbox button will flash while it searches for your console and will stay lit once paired.
